January 25, 2010 - N.C. Lawyers’ Weekly reported that the verdict obtained
by William S. Mills and Carlos E. Mahoney on March 6, 2009 in McDowell County, as
noted below, was the largest jury verdict in North Carolina during 2009.

December 21, 2009 - Jessica E. Leaven and
Carlos E. Mahoney obtained a $50,000 jury verdict in
Buncombe County for personal injuries suffered by the Firm’s client in a motor vehicle accident.
Damages were contested at trial.

October 27, 2009 - Stewart W. Fisher and Carlos E. Mahoney
obtained a jury verdict in federal court on behalf of the Firm’s
client in a civil rights lawsuit against a Moore County deputy
sheriff and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office. The jury held
the deputy sheriff liable for excessive force and battery and
awarded the Firm’s client $650,000 in compensatory damages, $100,000
in punitive damages under federal law, and $100,000 in punitive
damages under state law.

September 15, 2009 - Carlos E. Mahoney obtained a successful 2-1
ruling from the North Carolina Court of Appeals which upheld an
order granting summary judgment to the Firm’s client in a real
property dispute.

June 18, 2009, Jessica E. Leaven obtained a successful ruling
from the North Carolina Supreme Court in an employment lawsuit under
the State Whistleblower Act.
May 5, 2009 - William S. Mills obtained a successful ruling from
the North Carolina Court of Appeals which upheld an order granting
summary judgment to the Firm’s client in a contract dispute.

March 6, 2009 - William S. Mills and Carlos E. Mahoney obtained a total jury
verdict in the amount of $5,500,000 on behalf of the Firm’s clients in two
personal injury actions and a wrongful death claim against the McDowell County
Sheriff’s Office. The Firm’s clients were severely injured and their
two-year-old child was killed when a patrol car driven by a sheriff’s deputy hit
the rear of their car as they were traveling home in the slow-lane on Interstate
40-East near Old Fort, NC.
